Beef Boil

I love to freezer cook, mainly for the convenience but most of all for the savings in our food budget. One of my sessions involves lots of ground beef so when a sale comes around I immediately stock up. The problem is I now have 20 lbs of hamburger and a fridge that accomodates less than half of that.

I do have my sessions very well organized. They are broken down into recipes, procedures and ingredients. Aside from the meatballs the remaining beef needs to be cooked and added to the specific recipes after being prepared. Here's the dilema.

Problem:

Way too much beef that needs to be cooked
Frying is too messy and I don't want to spend more time cleaning than cooking
The microwave is too small.

Solution:

Boiling beef

I simply boil 4-5 lbs of beef at a time in a large dutch oven. Although I have to occasionally stir to avoid clumps I don't have to worry about burning it as is the case with the frying method. I can whip through the 20 lbs in no time...wish I could say that about the rest of the cooking session.

I use to do this with spices and they complained that it tasted funny. What are you doing diff?

I never use spices. Typically I add that type of stuff upon assembling the recipes. This beef is used in dishes like lasagna, hash and spaghetti sauces so they have never complained about the taste. I have never eaten it just like that but to tell you the truth I have never eaten it plain after frying either. My family would probably say it tasted different if I told them. LOL

I would love to know more about your freezer cooking! I have always wanted to try this but don't know where to start, especially with my picky eaters! ;)

Tested it, tried it, and loved it. Wow what a good idea. I used to fry all of the extra hamburger, which I loved, because its already when I need it but I hated the frying mess and the time it took. Another good idea from minimalist Mommy. Thanks
